June Week 1band_of_brothers.jpg

Personal Response - This week I began reading the book "Band of Brothers" by Stephen E. Ambrose. This is a diary of what "Easy Company's" journey through world war II on the Western Front was. The first few chapters I have read began with training camp in Tocoa which was from what many soldiers refer to being "brutally harsh and physically demanidng". It is tough, but very good. An American Soldier needs to be in top physical state and tough inside and outside before going to war. They journey to New York and go by boat to England where more training occurs, this time more battle simulations rather than testing their physical state. These simulations were essential becuase these where the kinds of terrains and situations in which they would be fighting the Germans throught Europe.

Then they drop into France on D-day. What I loved about these chapters is the author interviewed many soldiers and included their exact words on how they felt jumping out of those planes with bullets flying around them and seeing other planes being shot down at a distance. It really puts you in that situation after you read it, I also liked how he explained the use of their military tacticts and explained the "Flash Thunder" routine used to identify a fellow soldier or know he is an enemy soldier if he does not call back the right response. What I did not like is just one detail, it would have been better if the author would have explained how many companies and troops and the different attacks presented on D-Day but after all the book is based just on "E-Company" so that is probably why he did not include that.

June Week 2.

Creative Story - December 6, 1944. E Company. 506th Regiment, 101st Airborn. 0600 Hours.
The day is cold and weary, the soldiers are tired and restless and no one has smiled that morning of December 6. The previous day was nothing but cries of wounded soldiers, medics being called up front, and endless morter's slamming all day. No songs have been sung, no card games have been played, no one speaks. Orders are whispered between soldiers, but no one talks. First Lieutenant Winters lays in his foxhole along with Second Lieutenant Harry Welsh. "The Germans are preapring for another attack I can feel it" murmured Winters. "We should prepare defences along this line and have a few scouts to our 6 just in case these krauts decide to flank us." said Harry. "You take the first infantry division and set up along that tree line and put a 50. just behind that clearing" continued Winters "I'll take Easy and we'll hold them off here and have three panzer shrek teams ready to take out any armory". Easy Company prepared their defences and do the only thing they could, wait.

Two SS platoons and a German Armored division soon launched a full scale attack. "Webster! Private get me those god dam morter teams online! were being slaughtered here soldier!" yelled Winters. Easy Company was taking heavy losses and soldiers were falling quickly. The Germans came in with amory and infantry from the east, and infantry from the North. "Panzer teams get some fire on that Tiger! FIRE FIRE FIRE!" Continued Winters. Fifity calliber machine guns rang out, Thomsons and M1 Garands were being shot with out mercy, Scouts with their Springfield rifles were firing at every German soldier in sight. Bullets were flying every where and the loud harsh cries of "MEDIC! Medic up front! Medic!" rang out at a distance. The battle lasted about 3 hours but the soldiers felt it was an eternity. By the end of the day the German assasult was halted. Easy company had lost 24 Troops and 5 Officers, Corporal Joe Toye and Sargent William Garneare were among the fallen. Easy Company had recieved aid from the Second Infantry division and were able to hold out the attack. Coronel Sink Congratulated the soldiers himself and promised extra food rations and told them of a soon pull back to Paris. Later that week, U.S. Army had recieved intel of a shortage of German Soldiers along a section in the Ardennes, Easy Company was told of an offense to be held soon, once again the hopes of pulling back were vanished.

June Week 3Image1.jpg

Personal Response- This week I read the book "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy. This is a very strong a moving novel. The author portrays a harsh and war broken america with nothing left but dead trees and ash, although lawless and heartless criminals and blood raging cannibals stalk the country side in search of survival. I enjoyed reading this book becuase it really makes you think how humanity would react to a catastrohpy like this and I really do believe something close to what Cormac McCarthy writes is what would actually happen. The father and his son live through many terrible events and survive at any cost, "trust no one" and "keep the fire bruning inside". The author uses a very strong theme to portray the journey father and his son make through the wasteland. There are happy moments with the thought of hope and life, and there are others where suffering and death seem inevitable. The long and hard journey son and father make to finally reach the cost succedes but ends in a horrible tragedy that causes the reader to feel broken becuase of everything that they went through to end in a heartbeat when everything seemed to be going so well. Overall this was a very well written novel and I believe the novel was very well portrayed in all aspects.

June week 4

Personal Response- This week I went to watch the movie Robin Hood. This film was directed by Ridley Scott and features many famous ators like Russel Crowe and Kat Blanchett. This was a very well done movie in my opinion.external image russell-crowe-in-robin-hood-movie-poster.jpg There are many things that I liked about this movie, Russel Crowe is one of my favorite actors and I think he plays his roles very well. Just like in the Gladiator he makes a very believing warrior and soldier. He is very convincing in his role as an English archer. He plays old rolls very well. His performance in The Gladiator was very impresive, his role in Master and Commander was very impressive too, and he has done nothing less in Robin Hood. I liked the cinematography, the landscapes in which the movie was filmed are very attractive, and the towns look very realistic. The battle scenes were realistic but the first one is very "hollywood" ish becuase it does not make you believe a tower siege would have been that way, it is too un realistic. Archers run up and down the battle field dodging arrows and it would be highly unlikely anyone would have done that. The themes in this movie are love, betrayal, and conquest. I liked the ending shot that killed the french traitor, it was very satisfying. Overall I think this was a very well done movie, the ending is satisfying and I do believe this is the best done Robin hood yet.

July week 1

external image book-of-eli-poster-25-11-09-kc.jpgPersonal Response- This week I watched the movie "Book of Eli" starring Denzeil Washington and Mila Kunis. This was not a very good movie in my opinion. It is very unrealistic, special effects could be better, and I was not captured by the movie. All the battle scenes were very un realistic, its theme is the standard survival at all costs, just like that of every other post apocalypse movie out there. His mission is to protect the book, the last bible on earth. He encounters many obstacles on the way, which I do believe is realistic, there are many outlaws and bandits ambushing the helpless. Denzeil plays his role very well, but the over all movie was not very impressing. It could have been better. There are better post-apocalypse movies, like The Road which is one of the best books I've read and one of the best movies I've seen all time, compared to the book of eli are much better in quality, and presentation in my opinion. The road was done much better than the book of Eli. Special effects were better, it was more realistic, the overall cinematography of the book of eli was not very impressive. In the end the book of eli could have been done better in my opinion.

July Week 2
Personal Response- I really like World War II movies and shows and book, and I had never completely seen "Valkarexternal image valkyrie_movie_poster_tom_cruise.jpgie". I had seen it once but was almost impossible to pay attention with everything going on and this week I finally got to watch it. I had not seen this story of World War II and the brave soldiers who were involved in the assassination of Adolf Hitler, the Commander and Leader of the Third Reich. To think that just becuase of the placement of the bomb was on the wrong side of the table, could have stopped one of the most catastrophic wars in history. I like how Tom Cruise plays his role in this movie. At first I did not think he would play the role as a German Nazi soldier very well, but I was proved wrong. I was most pleased with his performence in this movie. I enjoy watching World War 2 movies and reading books so I loved this movie. The character they used for Hitler is almost identical to the real one, the characters chosen for this movie are fenominal. All of them look like German Nazi's and its just very well done. The cinematography was great, it did not make you say "thats just a hollywood set". Overall I really liked this movie and the tale of true brave soldiers story of trying to save the world it tells.

July Week 3
Personal Response- external image inception_movie_poster.jpgThis week I saw inception, by far, the foremost, best written, directed, and overall best done movie I have ever seen in my life. This movie stars Leonador Di Caprio, I could think of no one to play this role better than he did. The special effects are amazing, the role playing is fenominal, the story of the movie makes you think, thats what movies should be about. It makes the audience think, the movie is limitless. Anything could happen in the dream world. I just love this movie, I have never seen such a great film in my life. It is perfect in all aspects. I've seen it twice it was so good. I picked up a few things the second time I saw it to help me understand it alot more. The dreams within a dream within a dream to create incepetion and planting an idea into someones head, is very well done. The writer of this movie has a very creative mind. I admire him becuase this movie is just amazingly well done. The special effects and just the idea of what happens outside when you're dreaming affects you're dream its just perfect. The gravity shifts everything is awsome. I could think of nothing I would like to add or take away from the movie. It was presented in a way which makes the audience think about what will happend next and everyone would have their own theorys until the mystery of everyhting that is happening is presented later on in the movie. Overall this is the best movie I have seen in my entire life.

July Week 4
Personal Response- I saw part of the first day of Shark Week on August 1st. I admire the men who dive into open water with Great White Sharks. Shark week is on Discovery Channel. I saw an episode where a group of scientists went to South Africa to jump into the water and study great white sharks. Their main objective was to study how aggresive they were and to study their reactions to the humans swimming in the water with them. Personally I think these people are insane. Swimming in open water with several great white sharks around them is almost suicide. They must have alot of guts and experience around these fierce animals. I kind of disagree with them and many of the tours that attract sharks with blood becuase the beach and costal areas of south africa especially surfers are greatly affected by all of this.
